Has Obama Raised the Bar on Political Ads and Social Media?

In a local political ad that looks more like a National TV promo for a new NBC Drama Carmen Trutanich is introduced the same way a new star would be launch for a new Fall television series. His 2009 Official Los Angeles City Attorney Campaign Website has the FLASH intro of a modest motion picture release. If an actor can be president why not market a politician as an actor? Not knowing his political leanings does this slick video make you want to vote for Trutanich for the 2009 Los Angeles City Attorney?

Do you think his TV show could give Law and Order a run for it’s money? ;-)

Do you think Obama has raised the bar on political advertising and the use of social media?

  • Lola, Eric, and Tim,

On behalf of the Trutanich for City Attorney Campaign, we are happy that everyone enjoys the development. If you're registered to vote in Los Angeles, March 3RD is the day to elect Carmen Trutanich as LA City Attorney.

To answer the underlying question, did Obama raise the bar on political advertising and the use of social media? Absolutely.

Aside from the campaign website, when you isolate the campaign's presence on YouTube as a platform for social media, you will find that Obama's YouTube channel added just shy of 1,800 videos during the campaign, compared with McCain's 329. The YouTube channel for Obama had 114,500+ subscribers, while McCain's channel had a little over 28,400. When you compare Obama's 18.4 million channel views, to McCain's 2 million, the application of social media in the political sector will change the way campaigns unfold.

Once the election for city attorney is over, I can share more specifics relative to our company's use of social media, as well as, a preview to new plans which raise the bar even higher.

Below is a link to the micro-sites built for each community in Los Angeles City, as well as, the YouTube channel designed for the campaign.

    Respectfully,
    Steve

That Wendy Gruel ad is very slick, good grief. Unbelievable. I guess Obama started something.

Promo for a new online urban drama series!

  • Here's another one for Wendy Greuel and from the looks of the font I think some agency is spinning TV Promo magic on local politicians.

This one makes me think she's going to be a talk show host or have a new investigative reporter show.

  • This is a great ad. I wonder how effective it will be though. Do you think people will be confused and think he's not a real guy, just a character on a TV show? Is it too slick? I suppose if people know who he is before they see this ad it might be effective but as an introduction I don't think it would work.

I think the Obama campaign did raise the bar in a lot of areas. I'm sure we'll see a lot more stuff like this ad.
