Yes, marketers should go. But I disagree with some of the comments in the video. Marketers should go as marketers. Just like the pundits and “experts” go as “thought leaders”. It's amazing how many of the “experts” love to say it's not about marketing when they are ALWAYS marketing their personal brand, business, and service under the false pretense of engagement, community, and the public.
To say SXSW and the digital space is not about marketing (and money) is to be disingenuous. SXSW is not a gathering of pure tech folks looking for ways to expand digital and the mind — it's a chance for a lot of people to go to a great city for a few days of extended networking, eating, and boozing. It's Spring Break for the tech set. Nothing more. Nothing less.
