What’s Your Favorite Classic Commercial?

The Holiday Season always gets me a little melancholy and nothing grips me more than a video with conflict, spectacle, story and emotion. One of my favorite classic commercials is the G.I. Joe Barbie Nissan commercial. I just love the way G.I. Joe releases himself from the jaws of a T-REX, repells down the bookcase, jumps into the red convertible Nissan with Van Halen playing their cover of the Kink’s song, “You Really Got Me”, uses binoculars, takes out a cat, slams into the toy lawn furniture, whistles for Barbie, shows off the ride and then preppy Barbie turns into Bad Girl Barbie, gets in the car with G.I. Joe and they ride off together leaving preppy Ken crying.

They say this commercial didn’t sell more cars for Nissan but I wonder if it moved the needle for G.I. Joe or Barbie sales?

I LOVE commercials, but I don’t remember many from my childhood. One of my favorite ad campaigns was about blue Smarties (Smarties are found in Canada & the UK, haven’t seen the same product in the US) missing from the box, if you found a blue Smartie in your box, you’d win a prize. When they finally brought the blue ones back completely, I was so excited! I still eat the blue ones last because of it.

Here’s a runner up, since I couldn’t find the Smarties commercial on YouTube. I used to LOVE this ad when I saw it on TV in Scotland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29HXaYkhOzk
