Wild Girls of Tech

I’m not sure why women in technology make it a point of pointing out that they are girls in tech but I’m glad that more women are showing up at tech and social media events. I hope they just present themselves as people of tech. My mom never made a point about being a woman who owned a small business. She was just the boss.

For three decades my mom ran our family business. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and she didn’t talk about being a woman in business for herself, she just ran the business. I never knew it was tough being a woman in the workplace cause my mom made it look so easy. It wasn’t until I was in my late twenties when I saw a studio executive treat me different than a female producer. From then on I saw how different it was for men and women. That was when I realized that there might be something to this discrimination against females in the work place thing.

Girls in Tech is a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent and influential women in technology. As young women with the capacity to inspire, we made it our personal desire and passion to create and sustain an organization that focuses on the collaboration, promotion, growth and success of women in the technology sector.”

Technology is a “Good ol Boys” Club and groups like Girls in Tech take some of the fear factor out of entering a new career in tech especially when there is a lot to learn. They create a place where women can feel comfortable asking questions.

I caught up with Robyn Cohen Executive Managing Director LA Chapter Lead GIRLS IN TECH and learned what it was all about.
